Eek! Our Venevision is Showing!
You probably can’t see our ever-expanding library of international and independent film so I’ll be your peephole into the world behind the curtain of the Jaman Beta.
Notably, we have some very cool films from Venevision, an international distribution company of primarily Spanish language content.
Without further ado, allow me to profile my two favorite films from our Latino library!!!
El Callejon de los Milagros

“El Callejon de los Milagros” is called the most awarded film in Mexican history, boasting a staggering 49 awards. It’s also one of Salma Hayek’s first movies. Not only does it have mega-award power, it also has mega-hotness-star power!
The movie takes place in a small town and involves the strangely intertwining romantic and social relations of the characters. It’s a stunning and poignant movie about the complexities of human relationships.
Carambola

Gambling and pool make “Carambola” with a loud and appealing KRAK (”carambola” is a type of pocketless billiards). The film watches like a comedic Rat Pack symphony.
A pool hustler wins a billiards hall in a pool bet. He hands over the hall to be managed by Mutt (Diego Luna), who turns the place into a discoteque drug den.
The film is quick edited and very fun to watch: disco scenes, pool scenes, and great colors. The soundtrack is totally unstoppable: Cha-cha-cha meets salsa-a-a.
Stay tuned for more movie profiles!
