Jaman about town

p1010189.JPGThis weekend marked the end of the 2008 Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles.

The film opened with Charles Barnett’s “Namibia” starring Carl Lumbly, Danny Glover , Joel Haikali, and Obed Emvula. “Namibia” depicts the long struggle waged by the people of Namibia for their independence that was ultimately won with the help of Cuban military volunteers fighting in Angola.

Considered one of America’s greatest filmmakers, Charles Burnett was first noticed in 1977 with his Masters of Fine Arts thesis at UCLA, “Killer of Sheep”, which went on to win the Critics Award at the 1981 Berlin International Film Festival.

Jaman was in the house at PAFF, speaking as part of a panel on “The Intersection Between New and Old Media: How to Tell and Monetize Your Story.” Most notable about the audience of filmmakers was the willingness to embrace the internet as a viable means of distribution. There were many questions about how to understand new media and a real desire to understand how best to move into this space. It is clear that filmmakers want to take their work global and want to be smart about it. It’s a good time for filmmakers and film lovers around the globe.
