What’s Really the Deal at Sundance?
I’ve learned some harsh things here at Sundance. I assumed that if a film was screened here, that the future would be one long, juicy red carpet that lead to massive theatrical release, parties with Bono, and fortune so divine that you could give away Manolo Blahniks as party favors (er, ok, maybe not everyone would do this).
But did you know that only a few of the 121 feature films at this year’s Sundance are rumored to be picked up by the studios — what happens to those other marvelous films? Don’t you want to see them?
I had dinner last night with writer/director Tanuj Chopra. Chopra achieved a filmmaker’s dream of getting his film “Punching at the Sun” screened not only at 2006 Sundance, but also 2006 Tribeca, and it then won “Best Narrative” film at a third festival. Audiences loved it and Chopra was hailed as “one to watch,” but the studio deals never materialized. (I have more than a sneaky feeling that the main character being a South Asian teenager just didn’t have the broad “American” appeal that the studios wanted, grrrrr).
On Jaman, now “Punching at the Sun” can receive global distribution online. “It is the democratization of film,” says Jaman CEO Gaurav Dhillon. Cool, sounds good and while you’re it, pass the popcorn!

Esteemed Friends, Artists and Collaborators,
The 1st LATIN AMERICAN POETIC SHORT FILM FESTIVAL at the acclaimed NUYORICAN POET’S CAFÉ will feature Poetic short films by Latin American Filmmakers. Our mission is to support the emerging Independent Filmmaker by providing exposure in the Down Town Cultural Center of Manhattans’ Lower Eastside. At the NUYORICAN POETS CAFÉ Filmmakers can present their work to a diverse audience in an intimate atmosphere, meet and exchange ideas.
The LATIN AMERICAN POETIC SHORT FILM FESTIVAL is scheduled for September 2008.
“Poetic Film is a combination of expressive image and sound. It is original and personal. It need not be about poetry and yet, it can be set to poetry. It is lyrical, dreamlike, expresses new ideas, evokes emotion, triggers thought and heightens the spirit. If we are fortunate, Poetic Film may some day be uncovered for us to discover.”
