Al Adamson: More Ed Wood than Ed Wood

Hi guys, I thought you might love to hear… THIS GRUESOME TALE OF TREACHERY AND MUUUURRRDERRRR!

Some friends were over on Sunday (after the Sexploitation Film Fest) and Stacy (friend of mine) was poking around on the computer “researching” the people in the film… See, we noticed that the blond from Angel’s Wild Women was in most of these movies and we all got curious… well, let’s just say she made a better go-go dancer.

Turns out, her name was Regina Carrol, and she was married to the filmmaker, Al Adamson. Al and Regina are, of course, very popular in the cult film world. There are online memorials, fan sites, etc. Adamson’s movies are pretty bad, but some of them show a kind of Ed Wood-style genius that I can only describe as “whatever it takes” filmmaking. He actually took clips of Bella Lugosi for Dracula vs. Frankenstein, though Lugosi never was actually part of the cast. Clips of exploding cars are shared between several films (who wants to throw more than one car off a cliff?). It’s all so weird.

But weirder still Al’s gruesome death, which resembles a possible Adamson plot line so closely that it almost seems like it must be a setup: Al was murdered by his handyman after fights about debts, theft, and money owed to the handyman. Fred Fulford (playing the part of the handyman) had removed a whirlpool tub from Adamson’s bathroom earlier that year. When Adamson and Fulford were quarreling about money, Fulford struck Adamson with a blunt object. Adamson fell dead. Fulford then proceeded to toss Adamson in the hole left by the whirlpool tub and cover him over with four tons of concrete, neatly tiling over the concrete grave and then vacationing in Floriday for what he assumed would be the rest of his happy, Adamson-free life.

The saga continues, but you can read the rest of the details in the myriad news articles about the whole sordid affair.

It sounds just too weird, doesn’t it? Like maybe it was a SETUP?!?

In .9.5 release version, I’ll (hopefully) be able to build a huge fanpage for Adamson. In the mean time, check out Adamson’s films on Jaman!
