Based in San Francisco as we are, your friends at Jaman note the celebrations of 4/20. Unsurprised are we to find that the holiday, rooted in cannabis culture, began here in Northern California. And of course our thoughts wander to stoner cinema. On reflection it's easy to see why there are so many films celebrating marijuana, as the highs induced by cannabis and cinema are similar: general relaxation, the feeling of sensations washing over you as you become both detached and engaged.

Not that your blogger is necessarily experienced in illicit highs, of course.

The selection of 420-related films on Jaman, though by no means comprehensive, offers a solid overview of this curious strain of cinema. From the surprisingly practical Never Get Busted Again to the informative documentary Emperor of Hemp, Jaman's offerings are just the ticket for either a politically-charged or suitably mellow 4/20. And lest one think 420 cinema is solely the province of how-tos and goofy laughs, we offer (to our US viewers) the moving and upbeat comedy-drama Humboldt County
